What’s All the Fuss About Personal Training Anyway? Do you remember being back in school? Running around pretty much all day, getting home, and then going off to play with your friends? So much energy, seemingly always on the go!
Not anymore. Nowadays it’s a case of getting out of breath when climbing too many stairs, and getting home to collapse on the sofa, deplete of energy. How is it we live less active lives yet have less energy? It makes no sense!
Well, that is the reason. Our bodies are remarkably adaptive, and when we live sedentary lives, we lose muscle, gain fat, and our energy goes out the window.
Moreover, every year, usually in January and the start of summer, we decide to “get back in to shape.” Some of us are very successful! However, most of us fall back into our old routine after a month or so.
Is it because we don’t know what we are doing? No. It’s the 21st Century, and we have all the information in the world literally at our fingertips, so knowledge isn’t the issue.
The issue boils down to 3 factors of which a good personal trainer can help to solve:
We are inherently lazy creatures at our core. We will usually take the most comfortable option, even if we know it isn’t the right one. To be motivated to change ourselves, the pain of doing so needs to be less than the pain of staying the same.
This is how people succeed in creating these fantastic transformations for themselves, being how they were, became more painful than pushing through the discomfort of change.
However, for many of us, we develop an “ability” to put up with our situation, which dulls the pain we are in. This is where an external motivator bridges the gap. This is where the PT pushes you, encourages you to move, and helps you realize that getting fit isn’t as bad as you thought it would be.
Doing exercise and eating better is a great start, and will get you great results. For a time. After a little while, the body starts to adapt to what you are doing, and you need to either change things up or stay the course to get moving towards your goal. However, what most of us do is feel like we are putting in more work for fewer results, and it demotivates us, so we sack it in.
The PT understands this and keeps training fresh. They reassure you that you are where you are supposed to be and help remind you that if you stay on the path, you will get to your goal.
Mental Space / Energy
Change is tough. It requires a lot of your mental resources. Resources that are likely quite depleted from work and life. Creating your meal plan, your workouts and your schedule, changing things when needed, it becomes like a second job.
Many people fail, because doing it on their own takes up too much of their time and mental energy, leaving little for the workout.
However, hiring a professional takes the planning and mental drain out of the equation, allowing you to use the training to “switch off”, which in turn makes it energizing! It also takes the guesswork of whether what you are doing is right or effective out of the equation.
Also, we are [mostly] money driven to some extent. If we pay someone for a service, we are more likely to complete the required actions, because we have “skin in the game”, and want to make the most of our investment.
Ultimately, it comes down to this.

Before you know it, you will be enjoying the workouts, having more energy than ever before, both during and after work. Moreover, you never know, the person waiting at home for you, (or your future partner) will also enjoy the fruits of your labor!
