Two Types of Functional Mushrooms : Mushrooms are a miraculous creation of nature. Their power is just irrefutable. From deadly toxic to extreme psilocybin, humanity has come across another group of fungi, that is greatly admired, these days.

Even though they are used for centuries in eastern medicine, they’re just making their way in the western counterpart. We are talking about a group that is called functional or medical mushrooms.

Functional mushrooms are the fungi that apart of their nutritional value, provide beneficial health effects. What makes these mushrooms functional are the great compounds and properties they all possess. Apart from the beneficial substances that are common for all types, each of them is providing unique and powerful health effects.

Let’s look at two different types, their superpowers and how to use them.

It’s not a coincidence this mushroom resembles a lion’s mane. Chinese people say that it will help you gain the strength and memory of a lion.

What makes the lion’s mane mushroom so special, is the ability to affect the nerve growth factor. Meaning, it stimulates the nerve cell’s development and creates a lipid substance, Myelin, that increases the travel speed of the electrical impulses through the nervous system. In simple words, the lion’s mane increases one’s cognitive abilities by being a natural food for the neurons. Therefore, this mushroom gained another nickname: mushroom of the 21st century.

Lion’s mane is commonly used to alleviate the symptoms of the following diseases:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Parkinson’s diseases
  • Paralysis
  • Paresis
  • Brain dysfunctions.

Other common uses of Lion’s mane as a supplement are:

  • Improving  the memory and nervous system function
  • Supports liver function
  • Helps in fighting brain cancer, stomach and throat cancer.
  • Preventing auto-immune diseases
  • An excellent remedy for chronic diseases such as: Pneumonia, Hepatitis B, Bronchitis.

Known to boost the energy levels and improve the overall well-being, the Reshi mushroom was highly appreciated in Eastern traditional medicine. There were times  when royals would forbid the use of Reishi for anybody but them. What was so special about this fungus, is that they believed, it can improve the life force, in Chinese “Chi. Moreover, from the use of Reishi will benefit not only the body, but the mind and the spirit.

Fast forward to today, all this is backed up by science. Reishi does have the power to boost the immune system and support great physical and mental condition. Moreover, it is known as the elixir of life. It helps in the anti-aging process and regeneration of the cells.

Beneficial properties:

  1. Anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory
  2. Anti-bacterial
  3. Anti-virus properties
  4. Anti-aging. Antitumor properties
  5. Antioxidant properties
  6. Cardiotonic

Having in consideration all the beneficial compounds and properties of the Reishi mushroom, here is a list of what is commonly used for:

  • Provides thorough detoxification
  • Provides great support for recovering after operation, physical or mental exhaustion
  • It’s  great for balanced metabolism

How to Use Them

Some of the functional mushrooms are suitable for cooking and eating as food (Lion’s mane), while most of them are not edible (Reishi). However, there are certainly different ways you can take them as your dietary supplement.

  • As mushroom powder
  • As mushroom liquid (tincture)
  • As tablets/capsules

As the popularity of the mushrooms grows, so does the number of different products on the market. Honestly, there are some great ideas that will help you take your daily dose of mushroom in the easiest and most convenient way. Therefore, you can also find:

  • Mushrooms coffee powder – coffee for your usual routine but not your regular one. By just drinking your morning cup you will intake your daily mushroom dose.
  • Another mix that can be found on the market is cocoa and mushroom powder.
  • Mushroom tea
