Are you making any of them?

1. Not varying their workouts

If you’re not varying your workout, you simply won’t get any results. Your body gets to know what you’re asking from it. There’s no longer any surprise and your body isn’t being challenged.

Solution: alternate your cardio and resistance training, try different exercises, change up your weights, join a group class.

2. Focusing solely on cardio

If you still think cardio is the best fat burner you could be making one of the most common training mistakes. Strength training has the ability to get your heart rate up, burn extra calories and helps you build lean muscle mass. Building more muscle will help you burn more calories in the long run.

Solution: schedule in regular resistance training sessions or start by adding in weights to your cardio. Remember to seek the advice of a qualified personal trainer before you start lifting.

3. Overtraining Become a gym junkie?

We commend you for your dedication, but training too much can have a negative impact your results. Your body needs sufficient time to recover and repair ready for the next workout. Beginners may find they need a little longer to recover than those who’ve been training consistently for some time.

Solution: factor in a rest day. If you simply can’t fathom missing a workout, perhaps you need to consider a career change. There are quality fitness courses in Melbourne, Los Angeles, London – virtually in every city around the world. Getting qualified can allow you to turn your passion into a thriving career.

4. Not training hard enough

If you’re not developing a sweat, you’re probably not training hard enough. If you’re training for an hour at a moderate pace, you’ll gain more results by reducing your training time but increasing the intensity.

Solution: Take yourself out of your comfort zone and try a HIIT class or challenge yourself with a 30-minute workout giving it 100%.

5. Not setting goals

Some people head to the gym because they think they have to or they want to change something about their body. Sure, regular exercise will have a positive impact on your health but without focus and a goal, you’re not going to achieve obvious results. You want to give your workout a purpose and have a direction.

Solution: Set SMART goals and regularly review the goals to keep challenging yourself.

6. Not tracking progress

Whether your fitness goal is to improve your intensity, body composition or health, tracking your progress is giving you knowledge. If you’re not assessing your performance and gains, you’re just guessing how to move forward. You’ll also find seeing your progress gives you more motivation to continue training.

Solution: Keep a track of your workouts and your reps for each session. Every couple of weeks check your body measurements and even take photos once a month to get a visual of your progress.
