You’ve tried out a new GP and still not getting the answers you want. Maybe you’ve even tried their recommended physical therapist or seen a specialist. If it feels like you’re not being heard or the recommended treatments for your ailments just aren’t working, now is the time to consider alternative treatments. There’s no magic age. In fact, the more medical professionals you have on your dream team, the better.
It’s a common myth that western medicine is the only route to health and healing. Western medicine is relatively young compared to many alternative treatments. While it’s true that in some cases alternative treatments, such as massage therapy, might not work as quickly or obviously as western medicine (like painkillers), fast isn’t always better. Taking a holistic approach to your healthcare and being active and proactive is critical to your well-being.
Here are a few debunked myths on why many people don’t try alternative therapy sooner:
They think it’s not as “good” as mainstream medicine.
Ultimately, you won’t know until you try. Assuming the alternative therapy is either proven in non-western medicine or shows promise as a new therapy, it’s worth considering. Talk to your GP about it, but don’t take their word as gospel. Get second and third opinions. Do your own research.
Insurance won’t cover it.
This may or may not be true. Increasingly, insurance policies are covering more alternative treatments because they’re safer and more affordable. However, even if insurance doesn’t cover alternative therapy, there are options like payment plans and HAS accounts.
It’s not safe.
Are mainstream treatments “safe?” Not always. Safety is subjective, and it can often depend on the practitioner and the patient. This doesn’t mean you should blindly trust any form of therapy, but it does mean you should consider what safety means on a wider scale.
That’s not necessarily true. Nothing has worked yet, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope. If you already know mainstream treatments don’t work, continuing to pursue them is akin to insanity. Sometimes the simpler treatments work better. Again, research is involved here.
Nobody I know has done it.
It can be intimidating to be the first in your group to try a new treatment. However, unless an alternative treatment is in the trial stage, there are probably quite a few people who have done it. In your research, you’ll probably come across a number of first-person accounts. This information can be valuable.
Ultimately, there’s no perfect age to switch to or add in alternative treatments. Most people start looking at these options when they’re not getting answers or relief with mainstream medicine. However, if they tried alternative therapies sooner, it’s possible they could have saved time and pain. In the US, society is starting to look at health in a more holistic light, but we still have a long way to go. Maybe the answer you’re looking for is easier and gentler than you imagine.
